Microsoft’s latest innovation, Surface, takes the possibilities and user-friendliness of computers to a completely new level. Surface combines a desk, a computer and a massive horizontal touch-screen, which reacts to human touch and objects. On the surface the device looks a little like a coffee table but the tabletop is actually a touch-screen, which can be controlled by hand - or in fact by many hands, as Surface recognises multi-touch contact.

“We are extremely delighted to have been invited to the heart of Surface’s development. Satama sees Surface as a significant long-term business opportunity in Finland and Europe. Thanks to its user-friendliness and interactivity, Surface is ideal for restaurants, hotels, information centres and other public facilities, for example. Surface combines Satama’s core competences: understanding customer dialogues, user experience know-how and creative design as well as expertise in Microsoft technology.

In a restaurant, for example, Surface will be able to automatically detect when a customer places a glass on it. A menu will appear, as if by magic, next to the glass. When it comes to paying the bill, Surface divides the total between the number of glasses on the table. Browsing and zooming in and out of pictures taken with a mobile phone is just as easy - just place the phone on Surface’s touch-screen.

Surface will be in the shops before the end of the year.

TV3 suggests Microsoft Surface “fulfils a decade’s out ambition to bring users closer to their computers.”

Are you really interested in being closer to your computer or your family? If I am able to spend less time on the computer and more time with my family then I am interested in technology.

Actually, Microsoft Surface appears to be the ultimate docking station, synchronizing software, and social networking application. Instead of gathering around the water cooler, employees can gather around the Microsoft Surface and share the latest ideas.

Imagine one large conference table sized computer - and everyone sitting around the table able to share ideas.

Some of those we saw before in the Surface announcement, some of them—like the water app—are new, and quite neat. Besides the water app, which you can swish your hand around on to make waves, there’s the video puzzle, a finger paint program, a music app, photo app, casino app, a T-Mobile demo app that lets you see specs of any phone, and the dining app.

Arstechnica provides a hands-on look at the Microsoft Surface.

Essentially, Microsoft Surface is a computer embedded in a medium-sized table, with a large, flat display on top that is touch-sensitive. The software reacts to the touch of any object, including human fingers, and can track the presence and movement of many different objects at the same time. In addition to sensing touch, the Microsoft Surface unit can detect objects that are labeled with small “domino” stickers, and in the future, it will identify devices via radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags.

The product that Microsoft unveiled recently under the name “Surface” isn’t a technology, a reference design, a user interface, an application, a PC or an appliance. It’s furniture.

Whether the product is furniture or a PC, the idea is a nice addition to the living room. Actually, large surface areas are an excellent way to extend productivity. After all, I use the Tablet PC in the living room. Why not the Table PC?
